Systems Awareness That You Can Touch
We see hundreds of articles about systems awareness on LinkedIn. Our email feeds are full of newsletters talking about it. But there are very few ways for people to actually feel systems awareness in a way that’s relevant to their everyday work environments.
But we have one. Developed by a genius, Barry Oshry, an anthropologist who dedicated over five decades to this work. HCD uses his remarkable contribution, The Organizational Workshop, to help teams feel and reflect on their own systems, on the power dynamics, on the systems constraints.
In one day, a team can have a powerful experience of how our position in a system impacts our behavior. In one day, they can experience a shift in their understanding and empathy for their colleagues. It’s magic.
We know it works because we’ve done it with government institutions, with whole commercial leadership teams, with elite scientists, with kids from warring countries. It’s eye opening. Revealing our prejudices, our habits, our reluctance to change or challenge, the burdens of leadership, the frustration of the rank and file, the angst of middle managers and irritation of our customers.
You might be interested in knowing who some of the clients are who have inquired into their systems with this work. We do Good Works projects with government agencies and NGO’s. We’ve used this work with:
Design Center Philippines, The Philippine Trade Training Center, The Philippine Senate, Community Crafts Association of the Philippines, Inc.
Sarus, a center focused on empathy and connection in Cambodia
The Conversation in Indonesia
Several multinational corporations including PZCussons in Indonesia, AXA Philippines, Tesco Lotus, etc.
